Toddler Story Time with an SLP:

Tips to Engage Your Little One

Are you struggling to get your toddler interested in books? Or maybe you want to read to your kids but don’t know how to keep them engaged? As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I've got some simple yet effective tips to help you turn storytime into an interactive and fun experience.

1. Choose Child-Friendly Books: Opt for board books with rounded corners. They're safe and easy for little hands to hold.

2. Make it Interactive: Don't feel pressured to read every word on every page. If the text is short and simple, read it aloud but also add your own flair. Use silly environmental sounds like the swish of a paintbrush or the zoom of a car to make the story come alive.

3. Act it Out: Engage your child by acting out actions from the book. Stir an imaginary bowl or snore like you're asleep—these little additions make storytime dynamic and memorable.

4. One-on-One Quality Time: This is a fantastic opportunity for bonding. Your undivided attention makes it special quality time for both of you, even if reading isn't your favorite activity.
